Everly thought the screening process was easy. I was thrilled to receive the screening results during the appointment, as it allowed us to clearly understand the care plan moving forward.
— Jacque Engle, Everly’s mother
„Jacque Engle resides in Wake Forest, North Carolina, and is the mother of three very active school-aged kids. She runs a small business and works full-time, so she was pleased when her daughter, Everly, was able to complete a vision screening during her annual well-child visit.
Engle was surprised when the routine screening with the Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener identified a vision disorder that would require vision correction. The diagnosis also helped explain some of Everly’s experiences at school.
QUESTION: CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT EVERLY’S INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES?
ANSWER: Everly is an 8-year-old with a love for gymnastics, soccer, golf, animals, riding horses and singing (she’s a self-proclaimed “Swiftie”), and a creative knack for drawing and designing dresses for her dolls and stuffies. She has a big heart, loves being around her family and friends, and is often the life of the party!
QUESTION: WHERE WAS EVERLY SCREENED WITH A SPOT VISION SCREENER?
ANSWER: Our pediatrician screens our kids annually at their well-child visit with the Spot Vision Screener. Not having to add one more appointment to the list of things to do and knowing the kids can get an accurate eye screening at the pediatric office is a welcome relief.
QUESTION: HOW DID EVERLY HANDLE THE SCREENING?
ANSWER: Everly thought the screening process was easy. It took virtually no time for her to stand up and look into the camera from across the exam room. Within a few seconds, the images were captured, and that was it! Our provider was able to give us the results of the screening during the appointment.
QUESTION: WHAT DID THE SCREENING SHOW?
ANSWER: The screening showed Everly was experiencing a bit of farsightedness, which was making it difficult for her to read. We were provided with a printout of the results during our appointment.
QUESTION: WHAT FOLLOW-UP WAS NEEDED AFTER THE SCREENING? ANSWER: We were referred to an optometrist. It was beneficial for our optometrist to have all of the information from the initial screening in the printout we received at the pediatrician’s office. The optometrist confirmed that Everly had farsightedness. The provider told us that her farsightedness could likely be resolved with a relatively mild glasses prescription.
QUESTION: PRIOR TO THE SCREENING, WERE YOU AWARE EVERLY HAD A VISION ISSUE?
ANSWER: My husband and I were not aware! We were struggling to get Everly motivated to learn to read in kindergarten and could not figure out why she would become so frustrated when practicing. After the screening, we figured out it was simply due to blurred vision.
“Vision screening takes a few seconds with the Spot Vision Screener. It does not require any dilation, and you know what is going on with your child’s eyes during your regular well-child appointment.”
